National Treaties Summit

After much consideration, the physical gathering of the National Treaties Summit has been cancelled for at least two years and won’t proceed with a virtual conference at this point.

The National Treaties Summit steering committee carefully considered the options for holding the postponed Summit in 2021. The factors taken into account were the ongoing uncertainties induced by Australia’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic, the busier calendar in 2021 due to many events and fora that would have been held in 2020 being pushed into this year, and the related phenomena of ‘online’ fatigue in relation to holding lengthy conferences virtually.

For these reasons, the NTS Steering Committee have decided to cancel the physical gathering of a National Treaties Summit for at least 2 years and won’t proceed with a virtual conference at this point.

However, following the success of our Treaty Webinar series in 2020 we will keep the conversation going with new expanded rolling program of online events.

We will:

  • Produce a 24-month program of quarterly online Treaty events that will cover the key topics originally intended for the Summit. The events will highlight the status of treaty nationally and align with State and Territory elections and First Nations annual calendar moments like National Reconciliation and NAIDOC weeks; and
  • Transform the National Treaties Summit website into a go to hub for Treaty related news, events, video from all events and other resources.

What is the National Treaties Summit?

Organised by the NNTC, Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) and Melbourne Law School, the National Treaties Summit is intended to be a landmark gathering of First Nations leaders, community members, academics, politicians, international speakers and supporters to engage in a dialogue of Treaty and agreement-making.

The Summit is a chance to share and compare experiences from different jurisdictions, to explore international and historical context and to contribute to the momentum of Treaty happening across the continent.
