Dhawura Ngilan Business and Investor Initiative

The Dhawura Ngilan Business and Investor Initiative is an Indigenous-led project that aims to mobilise the Australian private sector to achieve best practice in the field of First Nations cultural heritage protection, in line with international agreements and community expectations.

It draws on Dhawura Ngilan (Remembering Country), a vision statement for Indigenous cultural heritage management produced in September 2020 by the Heritage Chairs and Officials of Australia and New Zealand. The vision puts forward Best Practice Standards for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Management and Legislation.

Led by the First Nations Heritage Protection Alliance, in partnership with Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) and the UN Global Compact Network Australia (UNGCNA), the Initiative aims to deliver resources and actionable guidance to enable investors and business to engage with First Nations Peoples more respectfully and effectively.

It will complement legislative reform efforts by creating broader acceptance within the private sector for strengthened protections on the right to self-determination and free, prior and informed consent.
